NF in a Clinical Practice – COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this training course is to present a comprehensive approach to the
clinical application of the emerging EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) modality.
The course is intended for clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists,
counselors, educational therapists, clinical social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, rehabilitation specialists and academic researchers in neurophysiology and biofeedback practitioners who have little or no background or experience with neurofeedback. It is also a good refresher course for current neurofeedback practitioners.
The course includes pre-course reading materials from selected professional texts.
It is important that you give adequate time to familiarize yourself with this material.
It will help you gain more from the course. The four-day course is a combination
of didactic presentations and hands-on training. Multiple practicums are conducted
over the four days. Neurofeedback systems are provided for practice by attendees.
Upon completion of the course, attendees will have gained a clear overview of the
capabilities of the EEG biofeedback process, how to evaluate clients with respect
to its possible use, how to choose an appropriate EEG biofeedback protocol and
implement it on computerized instrumentation, and how the process might be used
in their individual practices. We recommend additional courses and clinical
mentoring following this introductory course.
NF in a Clinical Practice COURSE OBJECTIVES
Ø Describe the latest research as it applies to neurobehavioral problems
and clinical disorders.
Ø Describe the latest research as it applies to EEG Neurofeedback and
the underlying science.
Ø Be able to identify the most appropriate clinical uses for EEG
Neurofeedback and application.
Ø Be able to record and measure the EEG from various 10-20 Electrode
sites with EEG Neurofeedback equipment.
Ø Demonstrate how to organize and write appropriate EEG Neurofeedback
Ø Identify the basic properties of the EEG including frequency and amplitude.
Ø Describe how arousal is measured across multiple modalities.
Ø Describe the relationship between arousal and task efficiency.
Ø Describe the basic principles of over-arousal, under-arousal, unstable
arousal and disordered arousal and problems associated with each.
Ø Utilize the symptom-based model of behavioral training with neurofeedback.
Ø Demonstrate the proper setup procedure for acquiring an optimum EEG
signal for neurofeedback training.
Ø Demonstrate how to set up an EEG training protocol and run a training
Ø Describe location-specific and frequency-specific decisions for
anticipated outcomes of training.
Ø Demonstrate how to use EEG measurements to help determine arousal issues and
inform training decisions.
Ø Describe what the EEG represents and how operant conditioning of
the EEG is the primary mechanism of neurofeedback.
Ø Discuss what structures in the brain create and affect the EEG,
especially the brainstem and thalamus.
Ø Appreciate the importance of central placements (e.g., Cz, C3, C4) for

understanding of the primary function of the main components
Ø Discuss the importance and relevance of such knowledge to applying
Ø Discuss efficacy/effectiveness research.
Ø Demonstrate how to develop a comprehensive assessment using standardized
