One of the fastest-growing new modalities in the United States for addressing psychological, psychiatric, and neurological problems is that of EEG biofeedback. This technique is based on operant conditioning of rhythmic EEG properties. Professor Barry Sterman of the UCLA School of Medicine discovered its beneficial effects fortuitously some twenty years ago, in connection with epilepsy research.

The neurosciences are just now coming to realize the important role of timing in brain function, and the role of "time binding" in organizing large neuronal ensembles. One researcher, Christoph von der Malsburg, has gone so far as to say that the recognition of the importance of binding in the neural code constitutes a scientific revolution. (Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 5, 1995, pp520-526).

There may be a comparable revolution in store for the clinical world, as it is recognized how fundamentally brain function can be altered and normalized by the use of operant conditioning of the EEG. Time binding and control of activation and arousal are organized by thalamically-regulated rhythmic modulation of neuronal excitability. Much psychopathology can be seen in terms of disruptions of normal neuromodulatory function. It is now clear that EEG-based training can effect significant remediation of such disregulation. Even medically intractable conditions have been found to yield readily to this new intervention. EEG biofeedback allows the psychologist to address the physiological basis of behavior problems without resort to medication, and it allows the psychiatrist and neurologist to improve upon medical management of many conditions.

The four-day training course gives a thorough grounding in this field, and prepares the professional for successful implementation of this new modality and for research in this field. EEG Spectrum International personnel are also available for continuing support. EEG Spectrum International has taught more than 1000 professionals to date. EEG Spectrum International has established a growing network of clinicians now numbering over 200 offices, and reaching some 17 countries.

We invite you to participate at the threshold of this revolution in our approach to brain-based disorders.

Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D.
